Frontone

The history of Frontone is mainly linked to its castle, contested by princes and warriors to dominate the surrounding villages. Frontone represents one of the clearest examples of military architecture of the eleventh century. For long period, was submited to the jurisdiction of Cagli and then to that of Gubbio. From 1291 to 1420 the Lords of Frontone were the Gabrielli of Gubbio. Gabrielli wer overthrown by Guidantonio Count of Urbino. For over a century, Frontone was part of the of the most famous family of Montefeltro and Della Rovere. In 1445, Sigismondo Malatesta of Rimini in the war against the Duke Federico da Montefeltro, tried to take away the Castle, but the personal intervention of Duke Federico, put Malatesta on the run.

Piobbico

Although the area was settled in Etruscan and Roman times, Piobbico is known from the Middle Ages as the seat of Brancaleoni lords, who held it from c. 1000 until the 19th century. Starting from the 12th century they ruled over the whole Massa Trabaria, until, after their opposition to Papal commander Gil de Albornoz and Pope Martin V they gave away their title of Duke to Federico Montefeltro in 1474, before receiving from the same Federico Montefeltro the coat of arms of the Duke of Urbino. Again in 1576, the Duke was given an oath of loyalty from Antonio Brancaleoni. After the male lineage of Brancaleoni ended, on the 25th of May 1729, the church took judicial control from the Brancaleoni family for just three years - after this, a papal bill extended the rights to Piobbico to the female line of the family - it thus stayed in the family's control until 1816.

Gradara

The ancient town is characterized by a double line of medieval walls and by the massive Castle, one of the best preserved in Italy. It is famous as being the location of the episode of Paolo and Francesca described by Dante Alighieri in the V Canto of his Inferno. The construction of the castle was begun in the 12th century by Pietro and Ridolfo del Grifo. Later, Malatesta da Verucchio captured the Grifo tower, which became the mastio of the current castle, which was to be finished in the 15th century.
After the Malatesta seignory, the town was conquered by the Sforza in the September 1289. Here, in 1494, arrived Lucrezia Borgia, wife of Giovanni Sforza. After a short domination of Lucrezia's brother, Cesare, Gradara was handed over to the della Rovere. After the end of the latter's dynasty, the city was administrated directly by the Popes.

San Leo

San Leo is a comune (municipality) in the Province of Rimini in the Italian region Emilia-Romagna, located about 135 kilometres (84 miles) southeast of Bologna and about 35 km (22 mi) southwest of Rimini. San Leo is home to a large fortress at an altitude of 600 metres above sea level. The Fortress of San Leo is a castle on the border of the Marche and Romagna regions of central Italy, and famous as the death-place of Count Cagliostro. It contains a museum.
It was one of the palaces owned by Federico da Montefeltro and his wife Battista Sforza and was a fortified, palatial retreat.
